Where are we now?

  • Planet Doctors has been created as a not for profit foundation under Belgian law;
  • 7 specialised doctors have committed to participating in missions to developing countries;
  • Advanced discussion has taken place with ministries of health and other partners in 2 African countries;
  • The first assessment mission to a rural area of Sudan has been organised for 2009.

What happens next?


  • In order to launch its activities at the beginning of 2009, Planet Doctors’ secretariat will be fully functional with permanent staff by January 2009;
  • Planet Doctors will undertake assessment missions with on-site research and dialogue with local partners in order to prepare the first trips and to allocate health professions to the most suitable location;
  • Planet Doctors will undertake intense dialogue with governments and partners in developing countries and in Europe in order to increase the number health professionals and the host countries involved.

Where do we want to be in a year?

By the end of 2009 Planet Doctors will have a functional foundation headquarters in Brussels with an expert team capable of dealing with all the foundation’s needs. Planet Doctors has also set the following targets:

  • in-depth studies carried out to analyse health care situation in potential host countries;
  • 3 assessment missions carried out;
  • 4 volunteer missions of doctors and health professionals to developing countries;
  • 7 health professionals sent to developing countries, with require equipment and supplies;
  • 160 hours of training carried out by health professionals in developing countries;
  • 1 health plan developed or modified with support from Planet Doctor volunteers;
  • 5 European countries involved;
  • 3 number of memorandums of understanding signed with partners in developing countries.
